Yufu - Heal Me Good
Some retro soul by way of Taiwan. Had to go digging deep to fill out the posts this week and I’m so glad I finally uncovered this little gem. Such solid musicianship on display here — it’s rare to hear something this dialed-in without feeling overly polished or throwback-for-throwback’s-sake.
Yufu’s working in a lane carved out by the likes of Barry White or Curtis Mayfield, but there’s a looseness and charm to this record that feels totally his own. It’s warm, analog, groove-heavy soul music with a wry sense of humor and just enough grit to keep things interesting.
The opening stretch is killer — Are You Elevated? sounds like it should be playing over the opening credits of a lost 70s cop show, all wah-wah guitars and strut. But it’s the woozy romantic psychedelic soul of 3rd Dose of Your Mystic Drug that really sold me.
Real happy I stumbled onto this one.
