The Beatles - Rubber Soul

The Beatles - Rubber Soul

A real transitional album for the Beatles. This (or maybe Help!) is the real pivot point in the sound of the Beatles. Here you get the first hints of folk influence and the first use of Indian instruments. It’s also by far their best record yet at this point in their career, and perhaps the last where they are fully cohering as a band, and Lennon/McCartney as a songwriting partnership. It’s honestly just back-to-back classics, which pretty much describes all Beatles output from this point on. Because of that I’m breaking my rule and putting five tracks as favourites. I can’t demote Michelle and I’m Looking Through You to just highlights. Girl just misses, and If I Needed Someone is a tough cut as well (the best song George has done by this point).

This is also the first where the Beatles are really using the studio as an instrument.

Favourites: Drive My Car  Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)  Michelle  In My Life  I’m Looking Through You

Other Highlights: You Won’t See Me  Nowhere Man The Word  What Goes On  Girl  Wait  If I Needed Someone
