Burzum - Filosofem

Burzum - Filosofem

There are two impulses in me. One that says that the artist as a person should not weigh into my judgment of their work, that I can let the author truly die. The other says that there are things more important than art, and that art, if it is good, is only good in so much as it is instrumental to some higher ideal. These two impulses are not necessarily contradictory, but they can be in conflict.

The question then becomes whether the work itself is good enough that we forget the author. Obviously how high we set the bar depends on the author. I think the bar is quite high in this case. But I also think that Filosofem crosses it. Others might disagree. You might not know what I’m talking about, and I think that’s fine, I think it might be to the good that the man behind Burzum is forgotten so that the work can be remembered without the stain.
